hemp hurd biochar research

Transforming Industrial Hemp Byproducts into Climate-Smart Solutions

Project Overview

Savor the World LLC, in collaboration with Biological, conducted one of the first industrial hemp hurd biochar research trials in Africa to evaluate the potential of hemp hurd as a sustainable biochar feedstock.

Industrial hemp hurd, the woody inner core of the hemp stalk, has traditionally been viewed as a byproduct of fiber processing. This project explored how that material could be converted into high-value biochar to support sustainable agriculture, carbon sequestration, and circular economy initiatives.

The trial represents another milestone in Savor the World LLC’s commitment to advancing innovative industrial hemp applications that create environmental, agricultural, and economic opportunities throughout East Africa.

Project Objectives

This initiative was designed to evaluate the feasibility of converting industrial hemp hurd into biochar while exploring its potential applications across multiple industries.

Research objectives included:

  • Evaluate industrial hemp hurd as a biochar feedstock
  • Assess processing performance during biochar production
  • Analyze the physical and chemical characteristics of the finished biochar
  • Explore opportunities for carbon sequestration
  • Investigate applications in regenerative agriculture
  • Support sustainable utilization of industrial hemp byproducts
  • Generate data to inform future research and commercialization efforts

Why Biochar?

Biochar is a carbon-rich material produced by heating biomass in a low-oxygen environment. It has gained global attention for its potential to:

  • Improve soil structure
  • Increase water retention
  • Support nutrient availability
  • Store carbon for long periods
  • Reduce agricultural waste
  • Promote regenerative farming practices

Industrial hemp hurd offers a promising renewable feedstock for biochar production due to its abundance, consistency, and potential for value-added processing.

From Hemp Hurd to Biochar

Step 1: Industrial hemp hurd prepared for processing prior to biochar production.

Step 2: Industrial hemp hurd was introduced into the biochar production system to evaluate processing characteristics and conversion efficiency.

Step 3: During thermal conversion, the hemp hurd was transformed into carbon-rich biochar while preserving structural characteristics valuable for agricultural applications.

Biochar Analysis Results

Introduction:

Following production, samples of the hemp hurd biochar were analyzed to better understand the material’s physical and chemical properties. The results provide valuable baseline information for evaluating future agricultural, environmental, and industrial applications.

  1. Input mass-187 kg
  2. Biomass Moisture 9.9%
  3. Output wet mass-242 kg
  4. Dry Mass-73.5 kg
  5. Yield- 39.34%
  6. Pyrolysis time 8 hrs.

This trial demonstrates the potential of industrial hemp hurd to serve as a valuable renewable resource beyond traditional fiber applications. By exploring biochar production, Savor the World LLC is contributing to research that supports climate-smart agriculture, sustainable waste utilization, and innovative industrial hemp commercialization.

The project also highlights opportunities to create additional value from industrial hemp processing while supporting environmental stewardship and circular economy principles.

Looking Ahead

The findings from this pilot project provide a foundation for continued research into industrial hemp biochar and its potential applications. Future work may include expanded field evaluations, soil performance studies, carbon characterization, and additional commercialization opportunities that support sustainable agriculture and climate resilience.
